Jonas Hanway was in favor of charity for illegitimate children. He also argued that ostracizing them was necessary to keep people faithful to their marriages. Did it work? No, it really didn't. People often don't need to have an illegitimate child,. So the idea that there could be this deterrent is just nonsense.
