I think my first interaction with British food is actually a funny story. I was in home at class and I was, this was middle school so it was probably 12 or 13. You were just yelling freedom while making Scottish food homework assignment. It's become a bit of a joke that's kind of continued without people knowing why. Look through and you'll find depth and diversity and regionality and influences from all over the world.
