Napoleon bonaparte consolidated french holdings in north italy. But he did so without instructions, orders, or, frankly, the authority to do so. The kingdom of sardinia would remain under french occupation. Bonaparte experiment with creating independent, french alligned republics out of northern italian duchies, provinces and city states.
