Tolkien's relatives were shocked that when he elected not to immediately volunteer for the British Army. He said in those days chaps joined up always scorned publicly. Instead he entered a program where he delayed his enlistment until completing his degree. Can I take 20 years to do this PhD? Yeah because like you'd probably be hoping that by the time you finish like the war would be over. But um that was not the case.
