Sultan declared Ali Pasha, the sort of potentate ruling in Albania and northwestern Greece, to be a rebel. He sought to crush his autonomous despotate. To do so he sent in new army units who successfully deposed him. However, this then touched off another cascading crisis because some of the local people were very unhappy,. especially Greeks.
