There was a belief that as we see in the Old Testament, especially that shield is a place from which the dead do not escape unless God allows it. There are similar stories from other cultures like in Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Ransom Theory specifically was interesting when I was reading about that because it's almost like there's this transaction. Christ goes down and he steals them back. Which sounds like what we're talking about.
