Hilary moss is professor of history and black studies at amers college. She says early public schools, or common schools as they were known, were formed during a period of great political anxiety. The founders of common schools in the 18 thirties and forties were explicit their job was to take a mishmash of working class, catholic and protestant children and turn them into americans.
