The Effect of Dehumanization on People
In the slave market, oftentimes they were set on the auction block naked and white slave owners would examine their whole body. This is how they justified separating families because they saw us as animals. And so you have a whole people group that lived under this type of dehumanization for centuries. So I think Douglass really wanted to make sure his readers and listeners understood exactly the the evil that we are fighting.
