Rise to Power: Night of the Long Knives
Adolf Hitler: Rise and Downfall
The Death of Gregor Strassa
The long knives was greeted almost with universal horror overseas as being evidence that this was a gangster state. But in Germany, there's a mixture of surprise, gratitude, relief and non-little gloating. An Inenberger is said to take word of the killings most calmly. Hitler sends Rudolf Hess on a mission to comfort the widows and families of the deceased. They died as martyrs, he tells them. Gregor Strassa's wife and Ernst Rome's mother are offered generous financial compensation. The elderly Frau Rom refuses hers. She'll take no blood money from her boy's murderers.
