Sontenax's Exile in Haiti
The conflict between the governor and the general came to a head in the summer of 1797. Despite Sontenax's best efforts, Toor saw was still first in the hearts of the Haitian people. An open showdown between the two men would inevitably result in victory for Luver Toor. The governor would announce his resignation, or be destroyed. After the meeting, he organized his supporters to put on violent demonstrations against his resignation. These disturbances were quickly crushed, and the now ex-governor was firmly escorted onto a ship bound for France.
