The very first chess playing programe was written before a computer even existed. Turring played it in 19 50, using an alcarithm worked out on paper. It didn't work very well but people continued to advance this research for decades. And then in 19 97, i b m deep blue computer beat garry casperof the reigning world champion of chess. This was a huge intellectual event because were thinking, ok, what now? Did we just solve artificial intelligence? T turns out that, no, you didn't.
