In 1970, my husband and I moved to California. He got a wonderful offer at Stanford that he wanted to take. So I started looking for a job at Stanford. My thesis advisor didn't know anybody at Stanford, but he did know someone at Berkeley. And so I got a job at Berkeley, but it was not a regular faculty job. It was a as a lecturer. On her first day at Berkeley, she saw two of her former classmates at MIT in the economics PhD program, and they were both assistant professors. She asked him: How come these two guys were assistant professors and I was a lowly lecturer? "It's because you live in Palo Alto"
