Jimm ow was born on land, so how is it she ends up living on the river? Once again, it's because of the discrimination those on the bottom wrung face. The poor can't afford to buy or rent and have little choice but to live on the water. There are some benefits to life here, particularly for women. Much of the labor, steering of boats, hawking goods, collecting linen from foreign ships to wash, is done by women.
