The Effect of Bed Rest on Muscle Function
In 10 days of bed rest and healthy older people, about a kilogram of muscle is lost just from their legs. When you put young people to bed for 30 days, these are studies done by NASA. They lose about 400 grams. So older people lose almost three times as much muscle in a third the period of time. Inactivity tends to stimulate insulin resistance or the risk of diabetes. And that has a really powerful effect on how efficiently your body makes muscle.
