The Knights of the Golden Circle played an important role in getting the South to secede. They had already been used as a kind of police force in some areas such as Texas. In 1860, opinion was divided in different parts of America over slavery and secession. Many people didn't realize how bad the war would be but many did realize there was a high likelihood of it.
