Immurement is also a religious practice. Anchorites were able to give advice that was somewhat independent of the rest of the church structure as well because they were considered religious figures. Once a monk or nun was inured, special consecration rituals were performed and they were effectively assumed dead to the world while still having some access to food,. education, the Eucharist, things like that were still delivered to them.
