The Effect of Tears on Emotional Expression
There are emotional triggers which become idiosyncratic if you like for each one of us but also there are emotional triggers that are embedded within our human responses. The tears bring a prosocial effect which again is so relevant for those very, very early infant bonds. Now the other thing that happens when we cry is it seems to inhibit our ability to speak. So recently for instance I was giving a toast at my son's wedding and I broke down. It's sort of like it supersedes language in some way which I don't know what's happening in the brain there for that to happen.
