The Effects of Expectation on the Amygdala
An experiment by Dan Salzman and colleagues that was done a few years ago. They were studying how the amygdala codes external events, whether it would be sensitive to both positive and negative information. And they found neurons that were actually driven, meaning they were spotted more strongly in response to reward or punishment cues. It really shows two important things, I believe. One is that the responses are coding both positive andnegative events, which is important given the emphasis that people have on negativity.
