How Long Does It Take to Write a Novel?

My last novel took about seven years and it came from a short story idea. But I always had the feeling something was in there. And creating characters who are complex and in unique difficulties really interests me. The ideas for the characters start to become quite real, so it develops its own momentum. It becomes a thing I find very rewarding to build and the problem solve.
