The Life and Times of Columbus on Hispaniola
With Navidad destroyed, Columbus set about building a new settlement to act as the base of operations on Hispaniola. On January 2nd of 1494, he officially dubbed his new town La Isabella, in honor of the queen he served. But over the next few months, life in La Isabella would prove difficult. Men who had been sold a get rich quick scheme were now feeling dissatisfied and misled. So the admiral resorted to a fairly draconian style of frontier justice to keep his colonists in line.
