Stus was a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki group, which fought for human rights in Ukraine. He is imprisoned and later sent to the Gulag where he died after going on a hunger strike. Stus' poems are not about politics but culture stands for itself with a shadow alongside it. They show that when Ukraine emerges as an independent state in the 1990s, culture is pursued very gently.
