When immigrants reached the dalls, a one time mission settlement on the columbia river, now in oregon state, and coolas town. They had to float from the dals to fort vancouver, floating a wagon down a river, floating across one, fording a a pulling one across river. Even if wagons were properly preppt and loaded, fording rivers was, at best, a risky endeavor. Pioneers would use picks and shovels to cut down stream banks to get their wagons down the incline and into the water.
