Motivating Students to Be Multilingual

The strongest predictor of the student's achievement in a second language is the amount of formal education they had had in their home language. A longitudinal study done by Thomas and Collier tracked the achievement of 200,000 English language learners over a period of 20 years. They came up with three important conclusions which were that immigrant students in the US public schools who had been exposed to early education in their homelanguage outperformed early immigrants who had only received education in English.
