The study was actually a randomized trial that evaluated the effect of in infants who were born preterm before 29 weeks of gestation. And what they found was that by the third transfusion infants who received unwashed blood had an increase in interleukin 17a to an a crisis factor, whereas infants who received wash blood had reduction in IL 17 TNFIL 6 IL 8 IL 12 and interferon gamma. The findings suggest that transfusion with unwashed PRBCs from female donors is associated with an increase in recipient immune response which can be ameliorated when you're washing RBCs.
