Laurent Goebler says that residents who fled over the hill for the San Fernando Valley suburbs weren't just ditching a night out at the picture palace. In 1953, in response to declining revenue and a distinct lack of good old Hollywood oomph, a man named E.M. Stewart came up with an idea. He said tourists come here looking for stars and are disappointed, so let's give them stars.
