Locating Legacies: ’On Stuart Hall’ with Kojo Koram

Radicals in Conversation

CHAPTER

The Empire Strikes Back

Stuart Hall writes that bad ideas can only be displaced by better, more appropriate ones. Robin Kelly said existential threats alone shouldn't be a basis for socialism. I think the wrestling with the legacy of Empire is a beginning point but it's not the end point towards being able to reimagine human society. It's acknowledging that the primary purpose of Empire is the extraction, hoarding and exploitation of material resources in order to benefit a tiny sliver of the global population. We also want to think about what are the social, familial, cultural relationships we want to protect in order to allow for more realised and much more refined lives.
