In April 19 forty one girls were allowed on gun sights. They can actually be in an operational area where they can be potentially fatally injured by falling shrapnel. This was highly glamorous if you think of the cult of hero that was growing during the second world war. A lot of girls felt really stifled at home often. And a couple of the women in my book, penny in particular, god bless her, had gone off as a sub mariner and promptly died off the coast of malta.
