Peatlands are the most carbon dense ecosystems on earth. In Southeast Asia where there are also very large areas of pealants, they have been deliberately drained for growing oil palm and other agricultural crops. We don't know whether carbon dioxide emissions that we're putting out from fossil fuel use would tip us over there.
