The idea of a punitive after life really arises very early in human literature, far predating christianity. And what i see it as being a direct result of injustice in human societies. The moment you get gross injustice in terms of wealth and in terms of power, you begin to see people who have no access to justice projecting justice into the next world. That's one of the things that is so hopeful about ghost stories - they give us this sense of continuity with our dead loved ones.
