As individuals what can we do to protect ourselves? schedule your outdoor activities carefully. Rest often in shady areas when your body has some chance to recover. You need to hydrate yourself, drink plenty of fluids regardless of how active you are. Young children and elderly people should be happily monitored so that they don't get heat exhaustion or heat related illness.
