Most people who perpetrate evil do not see what they're doing as evil. Evil is but rarely found in the perpetrator's own self-image and it's far more commonly found in the judgment of others. Morgan Hausel further makes the point that ordinary people can just be brainwashed into believing outrageous things to justify their actions. The biggest problems in the world come from lack of understanding, poor communication and poor empathy rather than intentional acts of evil.
