In 1536, after the Kingdom of England had been in existence for 600 years, more or less, England decided to expand its kingdom. They united and formed England as its own kingdom. Then just under 100 years later, in 1801 Ireland joined the Union, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed. So this made both of the big islands, so Ireland not Ireland, one United country. If you've really been paying attention though, you'll note that this is the United Kingdom  of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is what we have now. The British Isles are actually comprised of 6,000 different little islands.
