Semaphore and Morded

Wilkie collins described hewers as feverishly waving two cloth covered bushes, acting the part of a maniac. They would wave semaphor flags which had special meanings to communicate with boats that go over there or come this way. In the ninetenth century, they were prized for their oil for lamps - but i don't know what it was for.
