A big part of this was simply growing to understand more what the cultures I was kind of interested in were actually like, which can take a surprisingly long time. The frame of reference from which you're likely to have before you're looking really deeply is going to be pretty misleading. And that becomes even more the case if you then look into like Native American and other more, for lack of a better word, shamanistic or sorts of sorts of culture. They were conceived as polytheists early on. In the sense that it didn't make any sense, it was really heavily influenced by Tolkien's understanding of the Valar.
