The volatility in Bitcoin and the other cryptos that were coming into the market was much, much higher than the volatility in gold. That situation has only gotten worse in the intervening seven years or so. Since Bitcoin was launched in 2009, then its annualized volatility has been running at around 10 times the volatility that gold has shown.
