The aliens have become obsessed with trains - it's how they're communicating with each other. Maybe they believe trains to be the dominant life forms since they're so much bigger and eat people. Either way, chances are they'd also need somewhere inconspicuous to land their spacecraft. And if they're really into trains, maybe the old train graveyard would be where they would be.
