The way production worked was that it was consumed within certain, like familial units and kinship units. As industrial production comes about you're still independent but not necessarily on family as much. Wage labor did create a certain amount of freedom per se to pursue other desires. And so, it was only in this context that you could have this sort of new social role come about and be conceptualized as something different if that makes sense.
