A Belgian mathematician named Lambert Adolf Jacques-Quetlet who developed the term, or I guess the measure of BMI in 1832. Researchers initially used BMI to describe large groups of people, not individuals. It took off around the mid 20th century with actuaries looking to describe populations to determine things like risk and life insurance. At that time it was focused on white people.
