Zhengjigwanggong's big plans to take over central China starting with Nanjing turned into a hasty retreat. His fleet of a thousand vessels and 130,000 men managed to escape to Fujian but the Qing had beaten them. In 1661 he decided to move the Zheng family empire from Shama to Taiwan. He knew the Dutch had been squatting there for 37 years and they would have to go.
