Inon Kreitz became the CEO of Mattel in 2018, and he essentially decided he was going to reinvent the whole company. He needed to reclaim the rights to all of their different brands that they had licensed out to other studios. The movie is a co-production between Warner Bros., which is the type of partner you might expect, and Mattel Films.
