The Russian Military's Positional Defense and Manoeuvre Defense
On the Russian side, I think that they have a combination of always a positional defense and maneuver defense along the initial line. Part of the issue is also their counter-attacking to preventing Ukrainian forces from consolidating terrain. The job of a defense in depth is to attract your opponent's combat power over time, cannibalize their attack, and prevent them from being able to gain momentum.
