Dr. Benjamin Rush was one of the 56 men to sign the Declaration of Independence. He served as Surgeon General in the Continental Army After the Revolution he was an outspoken critic of slavery And a strong ally for Philadelphia's free black community Helping to found the city's first black churchRush believed that a strong democracy was closely linked to the health and wealth being of its people. For Rush, sickness and poor health threatened the very survival of the republic he so loved.
