When Haiti became independent in 1804, it had three sections of society. The light-skinned mulattos were the most educated section of the population. Then you had the generals from the successful slave armies. And then there was the mass of the population - 95% of the population upwards. Despite these profound rifts, Haiti is unified by its independence and its escape from colonial rule.
