The committee declared that it would be, quote, irresponsible to proceed with any clinical use of germline editing until issues of safety ethics and social consensus have been adequately explored. In making their recommendations for the way forward, they recognized the extraordinary opportunity that our new gene editing tools provide for advances in understanding early human development and the origins of disease. The National Academy of Sciences issued a kind of vague statement urging the scientific community to go slow and so forth.
