There's been a massive evolution in terms of the amount that a goalkeeper has to be strong on the ball and be able to distribute it. The sweeper position ceased to exist because of a wider tactical shift. No regular player has a past completion rate below 50 percent which was the average 20 odd years ago. Jordan Pickford is the lowest with 54 percent so it shows just slowly but surely the bar for retaining possession continues to grow.
