The mind cognition almost has to imagine that it has free will in order to act in the world which is really interesting. Free will also has a social role so if we think of ourselves as machines even stochastic machines then the notion of social responsibility like legal responsibility seems weird because people just you know the machine does what it does but they're not agents.
