The Nafhans and the Cobolds
Sometimes the Nafhans will leave cheese out for you. They'll cut corn for you, load the wagons that we still all have, and bring healing herbs for anyone who has been hurt. The worst they'll do is steal hay from neighbors for people they really like. There was some attempt in the early 1800s to rationalize the reason people believed in these things. It's not a lawful evil small reptilian humanoid with an AC of 12 and 5 hit points.
