The Importance of Stability Over Long Periods

I like to think about things in terms of what's stable over long periods, like what finds a natural equilibrium. And for example, like in, in trade, trade is a great example. But the thing is that this doesn't work at all because people talk and they will figure out who is the asshole that's ripping everyone off. So maximizing just for your own individual benefit might not be the best strategy. In fact, it is not the best strategy whatsoever.
