The next day, annais had built such a strong wall around herself that i was never going to be able to reach her again. Not once during the next few months did she speak to me about anything other than work related matters. As the silence between us grew, i began to be unable to sleep at night thinking about anais's girl every day. It began to seem wildly irresponsible for any mother to waste her money on religion and vehicle maintenance. To choose not to build up a safety net to protect her child there was only a flimsy aluminum door between the tiny girl and all the danger the world.
