Is It Your Job to Change the Culture of Mathematics?

There is some benefit to the competitiveness and ruthlessness of mathematics. But it does create this intimidating atmosphere as well. How do you improve that? I know it's not your job alone to, youno, change the culture of mathematics. Do you have any thoughts on what could be done? You've always got to keep pushing. And i guess it's true in a lot of other subjects as well,. Not just in masyou're starting a phd.
